8088

Manufacturer Intel Corp.
Category Hybrid central processing unit (8 bit external data bus, 16 bit internal data bus)
Introduction 1979
Max. Clock Frequency 8088A: 5 MHz
8088A-2: 8 MHz
8088A-1: 10 MHz
History

Reduced and inexpensive version of the 8086, especially for the 8-bit market. Internal processing 16 bit, external processing 8 bit. Designed for implementation into 8 bit components by means of minimum modification IBM chose this chip for its first microprocessor. So the 8088 became one of the most famous and influential CPU in microprocessor history.

Technology

Implemented in N-channel, depletion load, silicon gate technology (HMOS). It is directly compatible with iAPX 86/10 software and 8080/8085 hardware and periphals.
