8-bit Microprocessors

Z80

Manufacturer Zilog
Category Complete 8-bit parallel central processing unit
Introduction 1976
History

Has been designed by the same responsible persons as the 8080 who left Intel to found Zilog (Federico Faggin, Masatoshi Shima); one of the most popular microprocessors; although the Z80 was the processor with the most enhanced design, Zilog was not able to push the market by means of a strong sales and marketing department as Intel did; so Zilog lost the 8-bit and 16-bit race; nevertheless the Z80 is the best-selling microprocessor in history

Technology

N-Channel MOS technology or C-Channel MOS technology; enhancement of 8080A; single +5 V power supply;  instruction set includes all instructions of 8080 as a subset; no pin compatibility to 8080; clock logic within CPU; single clock signal;
