8-bit Microprocessors

8085

Manufacturer Intel Corp.
Category Complete 8 bit parallel central processing unit.
Introduction 1976
History

Designed to improve the 8080's performance by higher system speed; in competition to Motorola 6800 with single +5 V power supply; but only as transition for the 16-bit market (8086); Intel was the developer of the 8085A and the 8080A as well. But the individuals at Zilog who developed the Z80 were previously employed by Intel, at which time they developed the 8080A from the 8008; the Z80 and the 8085A therefore have equal claim to be the legitimate descendent of the 8080A.

Technology

manufactured in NMOS (8085A) and HMOS technology (8085AH)
Single 5 V power supply; 100 % software compatible with 8080A but not pin compatibe due to the reduction in power supplies; 1.3 us instruction cycle; on-chip clock generator, on-chip system controller; the 8085 instruction set is identical to the 8080 instruction set with two additional instructions (set interrupt mask, read interrupt mask); the 8085A incorporates all of the features that the 8224 (clock generator) and 8228 (system controller) provided for the 8080; direct addressing capability to 64 K bytes of memory; basic clock speed is 3 MHz; designed to fit into a minimum system of three IC's: CPU, RAM/IO, ROM (or PROM/IO). Power dissipation 1.5 W
