Manufacturer

Signetics

Category single chip 8-bit processor
Introduction 1975
History

First Signetics microprocessor;
The Signetics 2650 had a full complement of video, communications, and keyboard interface chips designed for use in video display terminals, but the 2650 is perhaps most notable for its use in a video game system developed by Signetics, which was licensed by and sold in the U.S. by Emerson as the Arcadia 2001.
Systems based on the same design were also sold under as many as 15 other brand names around the world, including LeisureVision in Canada, Hanimex HMG2650, Schmidt TVG2000, and Telefever in Germany as well as Advision Home Arcade in France and Leonardo in Italy.
The 2650 was also used in at least two early personal computers, the Central Data 2650 and Signetics' own Instructor 50.
Signetics, originally a subsidiary of Corning Glass Works, was first
sold to Valvo, which was later incorporated in the Dutch electronics giant Philips, which gradually phased out the Signetics brand name; descendants of the 2650's serial communications chips are currently sold as the Philips SC26 series.

Technology

N-Channel silicon gate MOS technology; single +5 V power supply;  it was not very difficult using support devices of the 8080A and MC 6800 with the 2650; imaginative use of status flags; rich variety of informative control signal; all 2650 signals are TTL compatible; arithmetic and logic unit, control unit and programmable registers are all implemented on the CPU; low power consumption (0.5 W);
