16-bit Microprocessors

MIL-STD-1750

Manufacturer Performance Semiconductor Corp.
Category 16-bit CMOS microprocessor
Introduction
History

In the late '70s the military saw a need for standardized computing and came up with two standards:
- the USAF developed Mil-Std-1750 as a 16 bit airborne processor
- the Mil-Std-1862 was assigned to the Army for a 32 bit ground computer
The 1862 got canceled which left 1750 as the only standard processor and during the '80s every DoD program required it (including user-based applications). Since the 1750 could only address 16 bit words and not bytes, this made ASCII string manipulation interesting.

CMOS technology; high performance military processor which executes the MIL-STD-1750A instruction set architecture; very reliable and radiation hardend.
Design based on a draft standard by USAF to be used in airborn computers and weapons systems; software written to such systems could be transferred to other applications using ADA which was the standard programming language for the U.S. Department of Defense; the 1750 was mainly produced in radiation resistance forms for military applications

The P1750A processor product line includes a family of processor devices built in CMOS for avionics, missile guidance and airborne applications. The family also includes processor devices built on Silicon on Sapphire (SOS) technology which are tolerant to single event upsets (SEU) as well as total dose radiation tolerance of greater than 100K. The SOS devices are designed for launch vehicles and long term satellite applications. The product line includes:
P1750A   processor for MIL-STD-1750A ISA
P1750AE   enhanced processor for MIL-STD-1750A ISA
P1750A/SOS processor for space applications
P1750AE/SOS   enhanced processor for space applications

Peripherals

P1753   Memory Management Unit (MMU)
P1754   processor Interface Chip (PIC)
